Supplement advice from Drug-Free Sport New Zealand

Staying aware of whether you are unknowingly taking banned substances includes knowing what’s in your supplements.
Drug Free Sport will no longer be advising athletes of a risk rating (low, medium, high) of a supplement but instead has increased the amount of information on their website to better enable you to make your own informed decisions.
Previously you have been able to contact them with the name of the supplement you are considering taking and they have been able to give you a risk rating. This will no longer be possible so the key messages are:
1/ no supplement is 100% safe. Batch tested supplements do not provide a guarantee against testing positive.

2/ supplements can be cross-contaminated by other substances – either in error during manufacturing or deliberately by the company to ensure users get results

3/ supplements can have inaccurate labeling

From an anti-doping perspective, all supplements carry an inherent risk for all athletes. The DFSNZ E-Learning tool is a good place to further educate yourself!

Megan’s road to Gold Coast has come to an end…

Screen Shot 2018-03-22 at 4.16.32 pm

The NZOC have confirmed that only 12 athletes will be competing in Weightlifting for New Zealand at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Unfortunately, Megan Signal was unable to meet her conditional selection criteria due to her recovery from knee reconstruction.

Olympic Weightlifting NZ is extremely proud of Megan and her determination throughout this process. She is an extremely talented athlete and demonstrated tremendous courage on her journey back from such a major injury. We believe wholeheartedly that Megan will make a significant impact on the international stage and we look forward to welcoming her into our next New Zealand Team!
